I have a fun and easy DIY sewing project for your Summer decor! Today I will be teaching you how to make this cute American flag bunting.
To start you will need my free American flag foundation paper piecing (FPP) pattern which you can downloadhere!
If you are new to FPP, I have a lot of video tutorials you can see here on my Youtube channel. This is a beginner-friendly pattern that will have you doing FPP in no time!
Print out 7 FPP templates at 100% scale and cut them out along the dotted line. Sew the flag section.
Once you have finished sewing the flags, rip out the paper template and give each block a good press with your iron.
Next, cut out (7) 4.5" x 6.5" rectangles of fabric for the backing of each flag.
Once you do that, lay the flag block right side up, then the backing fabric right side down on top of that. Pin together to keep them in place.
Sew around the perimeter of the block with a 1/4" seam. Leave a 3" gap on the bottom edge of the flag, backstitching at the start and end of the gap.
Clip each corner on the diagonal making sure not to clip the stitches.
Once you have the edges clipped, turn the block right side out. Use a sharp pair of scissors to poke out the corners so they are nice and sharp.
Fold the edges of the gap inward so they are flush with the edge and pin in place. Give the block a good press.
Starting on the bottom edge with the gap, topstitch around the entire perimeter with an 1/8" seam.
I like to batch my sewing and do the same step on every block all at once.
Next, lay your ribbon right side up. My piece is 2 yards long and 1" wide. Lay your first flag block right side up about 10" from the edge and pin in place.
Lay the rest of your blocks on top of your ribbon and pin in place. I spaced mine about 3.5" apart.
Take your bunting to your sewing machine and sew each flag to the ribbon along the stitch line you previously sewed on your flag.
Once you have them all sewn, your bunting is finished! Hang it up on your mantle, over your stove, or on the front of your house.

Thanks for joining me for this Summer decor DIY!
Lots of love, Liza

Amy Smart, has a link to down your American flag. I was not able to download. I then came to your website, I tried to download the flag, not able to download. Is the link no longer active?
