Bow Pouch Tutorial

I have a new episode of my Scrappy Sewing Series for you!

This tutorial walks you through how to make a bow pouch. For a video tutorial, visit my Instagram @lizataylorhandmade.

You can use any blocks to make this, or just use your choice of fabric! I used my free FPP heart pattern which can be downloaded HERE.

I made 6 of the hearts and sewed them right sides together (RST) in rows of three. I then sewed the two rows RST and pressed the seam to one side.

Follow the measurements below to make the same size pouch as me. If your pouch is a different size, simply cut out 2 lining pieces, 1 front, 1 back, and 2 pieces of fusible interfacing at all the same size.

For the front: make 6 FPP hearts and assemble as shown above.

For the lining: cut (2) 6.5" x 9.5" rectangles

For the back: cut (1) 6.5" x 9.5" rectangle

For the fusible interfacing (I used Pellon SF 101): cut (2) 6.5" x 9.5" rectangles

For the bow straps: cut (4) 3" x 12" pieces. If you are making a larger pouch, lengthen your straps by a couple inches.

Once you have all of your pieces ready, fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of your front and back pieces, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Next, lay your back piece right side up and then lay your front piece right side down on top of the back piece. Pin in place. With a 1/4" seam, sew the right, left, and bottom sides together. Do not sew the top edge.

Repeat with the two lining pieces, leaving a 4" gap on the bottom edge. Backstitch at the start and end of the gap.

Trim the two bottom corners of the two units you just made, taking care not to cut any stitches.

Turn your exterior unit right side out.

To make the bow straps, fold the 3" x 12" piece in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and iron. Open the fold and fold each edge in, touching the half way fold mark. Iron each edge. Next, fold the unit in half again and give it a good press. Topstitch down the long open edge, 1/8" from the edge. Do the same on one of the short edges.

*I like the look of the raw edge on the bow strap, as it will fray a little but will stop at the stitch line. If you prefer to close your short edge, you are welcome to do so!

With your exterior unit right side out, determine where you want your bow straps and pin them in place. I placed mine about 2" in from the sides. Repeat for all 4 straps.

Put your exterior unit inside the lining unit, right sides together. Line up the two side seams and pin together. Continue pinning around the whole top edge. Make sure the straps are down inside the two units and not on the outside.

Sew around the entire perimeter with a 1/4" seam allowance.

Turn the pouch right side out through the gap in the lining. Use a sharp object to poke out the corners, taking care to not poke a hole.

Fold the gap in the lining 1/4" in and pin in place. Topstitch the gap closed.

Push the lining inside the bag. Pin around the top edge evening up the lining and exterior edges. Topstitch around the perimeter with a 1/8" seam.

Tie your bows together and enjoy your new pouch! Let me know if you make this, I would love to see it!
